a sort of goulash

We have started on the Use It Up, by making a goulash-ish sort of thing.

Put some elderly dried butter beans in to soak, then boiled them up for 90 minutes (they really were elderly).

Took a piece of pork shoulder from the freezer, diced it up before it was quite thawed (much easier that way). Finely sliced four small onions, and slowly cooked them down with olive oil and some chopped chorizo (that said best before Dec 2010 (blimey) but smelt fine). Added a load of paprika at the end. Added those to the pork, with a big jar of roasted peppers sliced up, some caraway seeds, a tin of chopped tomatoes, and the heel ends of two bottles of red wine which had gone over too far to drink – extraordinary, in this house.

Left the lot in the slow cooker while we went Morris Dancing at Hooton Pagnell fete, in 26c temperatures. Really rather nice. Two tubs gone into the freezer, and one for tonight’s supper.

Used up:
pork from freezer
beans from store cupboard
tomatoes and peppers from tin cupboard
