it's really far too hot to cook

And so we’re not, really. Saturday was a stir fry – I found a small piece of frying steak in the freezer (I tend to buy four at a time, clingfilm them and freeze them individually). Added courgette, onion, red pepper, garlic and ginger. Marinated the steak, cut into thin strips, in cornflour, soy sauce, and rice wine. Ate with noodles.

And the greengrocer had gooseberries. GOOSEBERRIES. So I whipped up a sponge topping with ground almonds instead of flour, and we ate that Saturday night and Monday night, with ice cream.

Sunday was a tub out of the freezer; it had been in there a while, as the label had completely faded, but on the basis I only ever freeze meals, really, we thought we were safe. But by the time it had thawed enough to be identified as proper shepherds pie filling (yes, with lamb), we were too spaced out to even think about going out for potatoes (we very rarely have them in the house), and so we just ate it with rice.

For supper, I made a spelt soda bread, which we had with a pack of smoked salmon from the freezer, left over from the festive season.

And the rest of the salmon* went into an omelette last night, with some spring onions, and some of the spelt bread.

*Apart from the scrapeens that went into Lilith, who is recovering from a leg amputation after a traffic accident, and deserves every treat that is forthcoming.

So in the past few days, we have used up:
1 mystery tub
1 pack smoked salmon
1 tub of ice cream finished (no, we didn’t eat it all in two days!)
some flour
1 piece steak

Not bad, eh?
